7 Substitutes for Vegan Cheese
The art of making vegan cheese is amazing, because the moment you put it in your mouth, you realise that it tastes very similar to the real thing! So, here are tips on the best foods to make fresh vegan cheese.

Lemon Juice
This is really important to add to whatever you’re using because the sourness in lemons can create that “aged” taste, as when cheese ages, it becomes a little sour. This is an ingredient that I really recommend you to use when you’re making vegan cheese.
Cashews
Out of all the nuts I’ve tried, I think cashews really really represent cheese in many ways, such as cheesecakes, creamy cheese sauces and such.
Brazil Nuts
These nuts can go hand in hand with the cashew to make cheese. It will make the cheese appear a little darker in colour as well!
Almonds
Ever since I tasted almond cheese, I haven’t been able to get just how amazing it is. Almonds also make a great cheese alternative and can be used with other nuts to create vegan cheese. Almonds are brilliant to go with cheesy sauces.
Nutritional Yeast
I only recently found out about this, but there’s this flaky yellow thing you can buy (mostly online as stores don’t seem to have it) that almost look like fish food, but it’s very cheesy in flavour and is wonderful to add to create the cheese taste.
Pine Nuts
I’ve heard lots of pine nut cheeses before and those are great to try as well to make a nut cheese.
Macadamia Nuts
Sadly it’s harder to find macadamia nuts but it really reminds me of cashews in some ways, and I would make a wonderful nut cheese.

Tips: Try blending a mixture of nuts, nutritional yeast flakes and lemon juice together and chill it in the fridge for a day.
As you can see, there are plenty of alternatives for those who simply don’t want to eat dairy, lactose intolerant or want an alternative. I’ve grown to absolutely love the taste of vegan cheese, and it doesn’t make me feel nauseous like dairy often does, so it has been the perfect discovery!
